Sumuk Paintings
These four works were created for the 2021 Jeonnam Sumuk Biennale in Korea using traditional materials of Sumuk ink wash and mulberry paper. Similar to the Empty Landscape series the images are based on winter landscapes near my Colorado home: dry, stark, and seemingly empty. At first glance, the land appears simple, but closer observation reveals complex textures and details. The layers of brush marks emphasize the layers of time and history, both natural and manmade.
